Contemporaries’ President meets with House Representatives

As a member of the Women’s Procurement Circle, Contemporaries president, Erin Allen had the opportunity to join fellow WPC members to lobby congressional members last month on the Hill. The WPC is an organization designed around the goal of expanding the footprint of women-owned businesses in the government sector and removing the extensive barriers that exist for new Women Owned Small Businesses.

Members of the WPC gather on the Hill last month

The WPC sat down with Rep. Chris Pappas (D-NH-1), Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA-6), and Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-MI-3) to lobby Congress to fund the Small Business Administration to support the WOSB program in the same way Veteran owned businesses are supported. The SBA has a six month backlog of WOSB companies waiting to be certified so they can participate in WOSB programs and build their companies.  With only six people at the SBA tasked to administer and educate the federal market for WOSBs, this backlog is continuing to grow.

Women owned businesses employ 8% of the nation’s employees and yet the federal government has not reached its contracting goals for WOSBs. The WPC believes that more funding for the SBA to educate and onboard new WOSBs will help the federal government reach those small business goals.
